Millions of Americans each year use dating sites, chat rooms, social networking sites, & social media platforms to meet people.
Many of them; over time; form lasting relationships and many others are at least successful in ‘meeting someone’.
Scammers Use These Sites Too
While many people do find success with online dating, many others end up being scammed by online dating scammers. These scammers set up fake profiles; complete with fake photos; and begin luring in potential victims.
With the ultimate goal of having these victims send them money ‘in the name of love’.
Scammers Create Elaborate Story-lines
In order to get the victims to send them money some online dating scammers create elaborate story-lines involving ‘traveling’, ‘relationship issues’, or even ‘wedding planning’ stories to get them to believe that they are ‘real’.
I even have come across stories of scammers helping to plan the wedding and once the money gets into their hands they vanish! Never to be seen again, if you even met them in the first place.

How Do Online Dating Scams Work?
All of the above versions have one thing in common: They all operate the same way. Generally the following steps are involved in online dating scams
Step 1: 1st Encounter
This is when you click on the email, spam email, or legit looking ad. You then see right away pictures of a very hot barely legal age person complete with a story to lure you in.
Most people pick up on the scam in this step, however some people are lured in by the though of ‘easy love’ and they send a response to the person.
Step 2: Scammer Sends 1st Reply
Int his step the scammer; posing as a legit person; sends their first reply.
The reply most likely will have a story about how they are American and they are traveling or working abroad.
They will say that they look forward to seeing you in the very near future. The scammer will probably send you another couple of ‘hot pics’ and wait for your to respond.
Step 3: Scammer Achieves Emotional Connection
This step can vary in time with some scammers creating an emotional connection in as little as a few days. While others ‘stringing the person along’ for weeks or months at a time.
The point of this step is to get the person emotionally attached to this fictitious entity that the scammer has created. Once a connection is created the scammer will begin to nudge person into sending them money or help.
Step 4: Scammer Asks For Money
In this step the scammer needs money so that ‘she’ can see you. The reasons for the need for money are many however the most common reasons why are as follows:
- Medical Emergencies
- Visa or ‘other official documents’
- Hospital bills
Most people who have a vested interest in the scammer will send money on the promise that they ‘will arrive soon’. It is a dream that will never come to reality. Don’t ever send money or funds to anyone you don’t know or have never met.
Step 5: Scammer Disappears
Once the scammer receives the funds they will continue to ask for more and more until the person ‘wakes up’ an sees teh whole thing as a scam.
Once that happens the scammer disappears into the web never to be seen or heard from using the same name again. You might get a few emails from the scammer trying to guilt trip you, but don’t fall for it.
