When operating an online business it is important to know search engine optimization, specifically SEO Do’s and Don’ts. Knowing the right way of doing search engine optimization could make the difference between being ranked in the top 3 pages of Google or the top 30 pages.
SEO Guide: Beginners
Since SEO is a large and complex topic I have decided to create a mini SEO Guide for beginners. This guide will go over SEO Dos and Don’ts along with steps on how to improve your site’s seo.
Improve Your Site SEO In 8 Steps
In this article I will also go over how to improve your site’s seo in just 7 steps. If you really want to succeed with your online business you have to be willing to take action to improve your seo situation.
I will outline 8 steps and I want you to follow along and do all the steps. I bet once you do all the steps you will begin to see improvement to your seo situation.
Better SEO = More/Better Traffic
Step 1: Make Your Site Accessible
When it comes to seo it is important that your site be accessible from many different pages, posts, articles, or links. The search engines rank pages and sites based on many things but accessibility is one of them. To get better seo rankings take action and DO the following:
Get A Search Box Widget
Install a search box widget on your site. Having this plugin will help your visitor get the information they need or want the fastest. Everyone wants instant gratification and being able to offer that to visitors will help to better rank your pages and your site.
Link Your Site Together
Search Engines also rank your pages, content & site based on internal links that you have throughout your site. It is important to ‘link your site’ together by linking pages to other pages. By providing internal links throughout your site you show the search engines one vital piece of info:
- How Your Pages/Content Is Structured.
Search engines love sites that are well structured and have multiple links to multiple pages within the site. An example would be if you had a post ‘ 10 Ways To Write’ and then you wrote a article called ‘How To Write In Spanish’. You could link the spanish one to the 10 ways through a link.
Consider The BreadCrumb Plug-In
Consider adding The Breadcrumb Plug-in to your WordPress. It allows any visitor to know exactly where they are in their search. If they want to go back they can do that with one simple click. Having this plug in allows the search engines to again see the basic structure and helps prevent any ‘cluttering’ of the drop down top menu.
Have An Effective Site Layout
Continuing with the site structuring it is important that you design an effective layout for your site. Many people (I did it too) failed to even consider what the ‘grand plan’ would ultimately look like.
HAVE A PLAN
Take Action, Draw A Simple Layout
Take out a piece of paper and pen/pencil and draw out how you want your site to look like in the menu. Draw boxes with your main keywords with littler boxes below those with secondary keywords and so on.
Drawing it out also will help you to see roughly how many posts you will possibility create. Knowing the layout will enable you to better design a format that is easy to access and therefore easier to rank using seo algorithms.
Know How To Make A Site More Accessible?
if you know other ways to make your site accessible please leave a comment down below. I would like to hear from you on wht you think makes a site more accessible.
It’s Your Turn
Add ‘Search Box’ & Breadcrumb Plug-ins to your site using the WordPress Dashboard ‘plugins’. After that review your site’s menu and overall layout. Take a piece of paper & pen and draw out a menu that is more accessible and efficient.
Don’t Put Links On Just Home Page
When building internal links it is important to not put links to just your home page. If you do that you will slow your sites speed and make the homepage look all scammy with too many links. You could also get ranked lower because of too many links on one page.
Instead follow this rule of thumb, link several pages that naturally go together. If you had a blog series on ‘How To Build A Website’. Internally linking ‘How To Find Niche’ to a ‘Keyword Research’ post is a good way to internally link your site.
Spread out the links over all pages not just one or two.
Step 2: Provide Solid Tags
It is important that you label, tag and provide excellent file name for all type of media that you have on your site. This includes pics, videos, animation, it is important that you provide solid tagging to each of them.
It is an important step to do as it helps the Google ‘spiders’ know what the media format is all about.
Catalog Your Site’s Content
It is important that you catalog your site’s content through the use of categories. If you have a main category of ‘seo programs’ make sure that any sub-pages are about topic related to ‘seo programs’ such as ‘seo scam programs’. Doing this will allow for easier navigation, easier engagement and easier ability for search engines to rank the content.
Set Aside Time To Catalog Your Site
Right now I want you to set aside an hour of time in the next day or two. That time will be used to catalog your site’s content using categories and keywords.
Take action and begin increasing your sites SEO and your contents SEO.
Don’t Create ‘A Loop’ On Your Site
Don’t have any ‘infinite loops’ on your site, but what is an infinite loop? An infinite loop is when two pages link back to each other and not to other pages. When you loop pages you confuse Google and that results in lower rankings.
Having a drawn out diagram can help prevent creating ‘a loop’ on your site. So now that you do have that drawn out outline time to take action again.
Have You Ever Created ‘a loop’ On A Website?
Have you ever created ‘a loop’ within a website before? If you have let me know in the comments down below. You may also let me know if you did anything to fix it.
Step 3: Create Unique Quality Engaging Content
Creating content that is unique and engaging will rank higher with search engines because it will be considered to be of higher ‘quality’ to the user. However make sure that the content is also relevant to the topic, if it is not relevant your page may be ranked lower then if it were considered ‘relevant’.
Creating content does not have to be hard, in fact I have an article 4 Tips On Creating Site Content you can read just by clicking on it.
Do Effective Keyword Research
Knowing what keywords will attract traffic will help you to improve your site’s SEO and or content’s SEO performance. To learn how to keyword research the right way click HERE.
Don’t Copy & Paste Another Person’s Work
It is never a good idea to ‘steal’ another person’s work and then claim it as your own. Not only could this get you into trouble with the law, Google will spot it a mile away. Google and the other search engines catalog every piece of data and if their is a duplicate found on another site that site will be ranked lower and maybe reported.
Don’t Outsource Your Writing
Another thing to not do is to outsource your writing to sites such as Fiverr. It may seem like a good business decision, but outsourcing content creation can lead to many problems such as ‘copy & paste’ and LOWER rankings within Google.
You could also just get scammed be given a paper poorly written and written just to ‘rank’ and not for content. To learn why Fiverr is not a good choice for content creation click HERE.
Time To Take Action
Now it’s your turn, I want you to write for the next 30 minutes. Just get out a piece of paper or pull up a word document and just go nuts. See how much you can write in 30 minutes.
The more writing you do the more confident you will become to write quality content.
Step 4: Learn Good Linking Practices
As mentioned above having good internal linking overtime will lead to better rankings from within the search engines, but external links will help as well. It is therefore important to learn good external linking practices.
Some of these practices include:
- Create ‘How-To’ Articles
- Create Product Reviews
- Create Unique Quality Content
These practices allow you and others to use your content to link to other content on the web. When someone shares a piece of info they use an external link. Having lots of quality external links will lead to a better ranking for your site as a whole.
Don’t Buy Backlinks To Your Site
It may sound tempting, but DO NOT BUY backlinks to your site. Not only do not know the quality of these backlinks, you don’t want your work cited from a non-trusted site. Google and other search engines could de-rank or ‘devalue’ your site if the links are associated with non trusted sites or places.
Step 5: Improve User Experience
User experience is so important for several reasons, but the biggest reason is that users are what make you money in the world of online marketing. The site must be catered to your niche’s wants, needs and experiences.
A site that is hard to navigate will see a high ‘bounce rate’, but a an easy site will see a higher ‘click through rate’.
Have Fast Loading Page
Make sure your pages on your site load quickly, with the home page being a top priority. Having pages that load quickly allow the user to continue their interaction with the content.
Keep Text Content Above ‘The Fold’
When it comes to SEO you are ranked on a bunch of stuff and one ‘seo secret’ has to do with keeping text content above ‘the fold’ or the first third of the page. Google & others want to see the main body of text first followed by the media.
That’s why it’s important to restrict the use of ads, videos, or pics above ‘the fold’. Keeping as much text as possible above it will lead to better seo for your page and site.
Make Sure Theme Is Pleasing
Make sure that the layout of the site; including the theme; are pleasing to the eye and easy to navigate. Choosing a theme is a process that if done incorrectly can lead to lower visitor engagement. That leads to lower conversions in the affiliate marketing world.
Examine Your Site
Now I want you to examine your site and see if there is anything that can be improved that will enhance the visitor’s experience. If there is something that can help enhance it, I recommend trying it out.
Don’t Use Incorrect Information
Don’t intentionally put incorrect information into any content you create. Putting incorrect information can sometimes be illegal especially if that info is considered to be ‘false claims’. The last thing you need as a business owner is lawsuit due to ‘incorrect information’.
Don’t Create ‘Word Monsters’ Of Content
When creating content make sure that you keep your information basic and understandable to the average person. Don’t create a ‘word monster’ of over 4,000 words with only 4-6 paragraphs. You need to break down the content into digestible 2-3 sentence paragraphs with ‘mini headlines’ to separate the content.
Don’t Place Ads Above The Fold
Again do not place ads above the first 1/3 of the article or ‘the fold’. Keep you most important information up there. Google and other search engines will keep your site/page lower if ads appear above ‘the fold’.
Step 6: Be Mobile Responsive
In 2017 over 65% of all visitors to sites come from ‘mobile devices’ which means that you need to make your site ‘mobile responsive’.
You need to make sure your WordPress theme is ‘mobile responsive’ (some themes still are not MR) to get that 65% traffic possibility.
It is important to take into consideration ‘mobile devices’ when you are also creating your site layout. People use devices differently then laptops or even desk tops.
People want to click on images and print more then just read the text most of the time.
Don’t Ignore The ‘Mobile Devices’
Don’t ignore mobile devices as a platform for your site, by doing so you risk losing close to 65% of your targeted audience. To succeed online you must be able to reach as many people as you can and simply choosing to ignore 65% of your market is irresponsible.
Step 7: Get Social
In order to be successful online you need to reach people across the internet. The way to do that today is spread your ‘message’ through social media.
Spread The Word
Installing a Social Media plug-in on your WordPress site will help you to reach more people by uploading your content straight to social media. Social media plays a big role in affiliate marketing in the 2010’s. It is important to spread you r message far and wide.
By using social media to extend your reach you also enable the ability to get more traffic and that means money.
