This is a sad fact of the current job market in 2017. Regardless of what the government maybe telling us about the economy or the job market the sad fact is close to 3/4 of people hate their jobs!
7 Reasons Why 70% Hate Their Jobs
Reason 1: Wage Paid Doesn’t Cover Basic Needs
50% Make Under $30,000 Gross Yearly
According to the Social Security Administration 50% of all American Workers receive a gross income of under $30,000. That means that about 45,000,000 people make less than they did in 1999! In 1999 50% of workers made $47,000, what happened!
Factor In Payroll Taxes
Let’s factor in payroll taxes into your ‘wage’.
- 7.65% to FICA (Social Security 6.2% Medicare 1.45%)
- 10% + to Federal Income Tax
- Possible State/Local Income Taxes
- Self Employed
- 15.3% to FICA
- 10% + to Federal Income Taxes
- 6% to FUTA ($0-6,000 only)
- Possible State/local Income Taxes
- Possible Federal/State Business Taxes
Now bare minimum between 17.65-25.3% of your ‘wages’ go away, so you may be paid $15/hr, but between $2.65-3.80 gets taken away. You can’t escape that!
Minimum Wage Cage Workers
Since 2009, we have seen the majority of ‘new jobs’ be nothing more than minimum wage jobs that BEGIN at $7.25/hr (Federal Level).
In certain places the minimum wage is $15/hr Even if you make $15/hr and take out NO TAXES, you only make 31,200 a year.
Not A Living Wage, But A Past Wage
That is not a living wage, it is a wage that was PAID in the 1980’s and 1990s to college educated people at blue collar jobs. This wage is a past wage and does not reflect the current needs of the American Worker.

Reason 2: Little Or No Benefits
Most jobs do not even provide benefits that where provided not even 20 years ago. These benefits include Paid Leave, Sick Pay, Health Insurance, & Pensions to name a few. Businesses only provide what the Federal Government tells them to, as they can skirt state requirements by being filling litigation in courts.
Paid Leave Not Required
In 2017 the U.S. still has no federal mandate to provide Paid Leave for employees. They have to provide then with 12 weeks of non-paid leave thanks to the Family Leave Act of 1994.
However you must have worked full time or worked over 800 hours in a year with that employer to qualify.
The Paid Leave issue is voluntary, however some businesses and some states have stepped up to provide this benefit. This benefit is not available to MOST American Workers however.
Healthy Insurance Mandate = Part Time Employees
Health Insurance is required for FULL TIME employees at most businesses, so a lot of businesses avoid this requirement by only having them work ‘less then 25 hours a week’. No full time employees, no health insurance mandate.
Again some businesses and States have stepped up to close this loophole, but as statistics show most business now only have ‘part time’ employees.
In 2017 very few businesses offer Pensions once you ‘retire’ or ‘transfer’ to another job. The reason why is very simple: No Way To Pay For Them.
The concept of a pension was a great concept, but with limited job security and a global economy bent on competition many businesses simply can not afford to provide them anymore.
The Era Of No Pensions
The era of no pensions has no arrived with only Social Security as most worker’s ‘pension’. Come 2035; without Congressional Action; that pension is set to be cut by 21% as the payroll taxes will only be able to cover 79% of the ‘promised benefit’.
Reason 3: Little Or No Job Security
In 2017 the idea of job security is a thing of the past unless you are in a field that is in demand now and will be in the future such as legal, medical or tax fields.
For the rest of us the concept of job security is just that: a concept. There is no real reason to believe that your job will be there the next day you come in.
Most Workers Work For ‘At Will’ Businesses
Most American Workers work in states that allow businesses to operate at an ‘at-will’ capacity. This means that the business can fire you ‘at will’ for almost any reason.
However certain reasons are illegal under both Federal & State Statute. You can not be fired for the following reasons:
- Race, Gender, National Origin, Disability, Religion, Alien Status or Age (40+)
- Being pregnant, recently given birth, or related medical condition
- Reporting OSHA violations
- Refusal to take a lie detector test.
If you where fired from a job due the above reasons I suggest you talk to an attorney in your area. You may have a MEGA lawsuit on your hands.
Reason 4: Lack Of Job Training
Even if you can get a job you may not have the education, tools, or experience to do the job. Failure to be able to do the job means that the employer can now legally fire you.
A Few Programs Available
However there are job training programs available to people to get the tools, resources, & education they need to get a job.
Some businesses in fact partner with these programs and help place people into steady full time employment.

Reason 5: No ‘Degree’ No Job
This is a big reason why many people are stuck doing minimum wage jobs or they can not advance in the job they are currently at.
The idea that a piece of paper makes you ‘qualified’ for a position is discriminatory to some people.
Some Can’t Afford ‘Higher Education’
Some people can not afford higher education and that should not be a reason why they can’t make over $15/hr. There are workers out there who have worked at the same company for years and can’t advance because they don;t have a ‘piece of paper’. While a 22 year old can waltz into that same company and get the job with no experience.
‘Higher Education’ Logic Flawed In 2017
The attitude that higher education leads to more money is a flawed logic. With over 80% of U.S. workers with a college education explain why only 50% make above $30,000. Shouldn’t 80% make over minimum wage?

Reason 6: Lack Of Respect
This is a big one and a is a factor in why most people leave their jobs. The lack of respect from either their boss, manager or even co-workers is a breeding ground for discourse. Respect in the workplace is earned, not given.
However some people don’t give respect even when it is clearly warranted or deserved. Some employers even force employees to miss ‘events’ in their own personal lives because of this lack of respect.
Missing your child’s game or ‘life event’ because your employee needs you is not acceptable and you should not accept it.
Reason 7: No Future Within Job
This reason is a reason that most people up and leave their jobs. They see no future in that job. They see no advancement opportunities, no wage increases, no benefits.They only see long hours with a wage that is not sustainable.
This is a reason why most people in fact have multiple jobs, one job is not enough and they need two or more to equal a living wage. However working over 60 hours a week for a living wage in 2017 is not acceptable!
